Analyzing Director Quentin Tarantino as an Auteur
Quentin Tarantino is one of the famous American directors focused on directing films associated with crime scenes. As a consistent director in directing films regarding the techniques he uses, Quentin Tarantino remains one of the greatest American Auteur. An Auteur is a term used to describe directors as the filmmakers and directors of films. According to the Auteur theory, film directors are considered the authors of the films they have directed because directors spearhead most of the creativity associated with the film movies. Most of the exciting films we have watched entails the work of great directors who work hard to ensure movies are more exciting and appealing than the way its authors intended or expected. In other words, directors are viewed as not only directors but also artists based on the auteur theory.
The main reason why most directors are regarded as auteurs is that, besides incorporating the original scripts from authors, directors come up with creative scenes that match the scripts. Such directors also go beyond what is suggested in scripts to more creative scenes that reflect directors’ feelings after understanding the scripts. However, not all directors are Auteurs since some of them rarely question the originality of scripts and scenes. They simply translate directly what scripts say regarding a given subject without digging the dipper meaning of the script. This paper aims to critically discuss what Auteur theory entails using Quentin Tarantino, who has directed several films. For this discussion, two films directed by Quentin Tarantino will be used. They include the “Inglorious Bastards” and the Kill Bill.
Director Quentin Tarantino employs diverse and unique techniques in directing movies, making him one of the populous auteurs. An excellent characteristic that defines a great auteur is the use of distinct personalities. Great auteur goes beyond direct interpretation of scripts. They direct the movies as is they are the writers of the film. In other words, such directors unmistakably own the movies they direct through incorporating specific techniques. For instance, in the “Inglorious Bastards,” director Quentin Tarantino produces scenes that last more than in any other movie. He uses this technique to ensure viewers or audience understands every scene. This is unlike in the movies where some scenes last for a few seconds, making it hard for the audience to comprehend what happens. Director Quentin Tarantino not only clarifies all the scenes by making them last for some time but also uses beautiful scenes accompanies with suitable locations, themes, and music. Besides, Quentin Tarantino employs the technique of dialogue in most scenes to reveal what happens in the scenes. This makes the scenes quite compelling to viewers as they follow up on every scene while they understand them.
In the movie Kill the Bill, Director Quentin Tarantino pictures a woman with blood on her face during the beginning of the film (Popcorn Talk, 2015). This leaves views in an uncertain mood because they do not know what is happening. The scenes match the name of the movies, which is “Kill the Bull.” There is a close connection between the act of killing, as suggested by the movie’s title and the scene depicting women with a bloody face. It makes the audience predict what would happen in the film. In most action movies, directors use boring and unpredictable scenes during the preliminaries of their movies, which discourages many people from watching the film. For director Quentin Tarantino, however, each movie script is accompanied by the appropriate scenes, and this makes his movies quite compelling to watch.
In most movies, directors use voice covers, which is contrary to Director Quentin Tarantino’s technique of using silence. Silence is an excellent option for letting the audience synthesize and understand some scenes that do not necessarily require voice covers. Instead of using voice covers, Director Quentin Tarantino chooses to employ appears and silence. This is a rare technique in most movies. I find it boring to watch movies that do not have the element of silence and appear in some scenes. In other words, a noisy movie or movies with all of its scenes accompanied by audiovisual scenes seem unappealing not only to me but to many viewers. A great movie director who fits in the category of an auteur uses appears and silence beside the apparent use of voice covers in scenes.
Another significant characteristic of an auteur director is the use of inner meaning. An ordinary director would not go beyond the entertainment aspect of their movies. Instead, they focus on the direct message or lesson intended by the author. A great director, such as the Quentin Tarantino would not only focus on the direct meaning of script but also the inner meaning and the message conveyed by a given script. Thus, when directing movies, Quentin Tarantino ensures scenes send a message that can be applied in real life in some way. While in the real world, many people would wish to revenge after terrible offenses are committed against them, Quentin Tarantino uses revenge-based headlines to insinuate justice indirectly. Although government and state laws prohibit revenge when viewers are watching movies, they always look forward to seeing offenders being punished severely through revenge. Specifically, in action movies, every viewer hopes to see criminals being subjected to harsher punishment after they have offended others. In the movie “Kill Bill,” the headline or title suggests that someone would be killed perhaps because he or she committed crimes against others. This is also depicted as the movie starts where a woman with a bloody face appears. While some viewers may think the movies are simply about revenge, other viewers who synthesize the meaning of film relate such movies with justice. Anyone who commits crimes must be punished and subjected to the same treatment. Therefore, unlike many directors, Quentin Tarantino uses revenge-based headlines as a critical technique that reveals justice to those who deserve it and punishment to crime perpetrators.
In conclusion, Quentin Tarantino is an example of a great auteur who uses unique themes and techniques in the movies he directs. Each of the movies directed by Quentin Tarantino reveals a consistent and unique technique that elevates his auteur status. Most directors who direct movies for the sake of doing it hardly compare with Quentin Tarantino because he takes his time to come up with a great art that exceeds the expectation of film authors. Quentin Tarantino has greatly used techniques such as silence and appears inner meaning, and long, clear, and narrated scenes to ensure the audience understands all the movies he has directed.
