Extract from Teddy Reno's Ricordi, Roma, Gremese, , pages

«I had the non-indifferent responsibility of the technical-artistic realization of all the music and songs, composed by a great and, for me, unforgettable maestro: Nino Rota, the composer of all the soundtracks of Federico Fellini's masterpieces.

When he made Rita and me listen for the first time to the song-hymn of the boys in the boarding school, called Viva la pappa col pomodoro, we were left at first glance, definitely badly affected, because the rhythm was a kind of old-fashioned minuet and it clashed decisively with the young "world" of Rita and her "fans".

And here came out all the modesty typical of the true "great ones" because he willingly accepted two of my suggestions, that of singing a "bounce-tempo" that would make everything even "danceable" for millions of kids and to play the entire introduction to the Austrian zither player Anton Karas, the author of the famous soundtrack of the film "The Third Man".»

Viva la pa-pa-pappa
Col po-po-po-po-po-po-pomodoro

Che è un capo-po-po-po-po-polavoro
Viva la pa pa-pa-pappa

La storia del passato
Ormai ce l'ha insegnato
Che un popolo affamato
Fa la rivoluzion
Ragion per cui affamati
Abbiamo combatutto
Perciò "buon appetito"
Facciamo colazion
[Refrain]
The history of the past
By now he has taught us
What a hungry people
It makes the revolution
Which is why you are hungry
We fought
So "good appetite"
Let's have breakfast
[Refrain]
La pancia che borbotta
È causa del complottto
È causa della lotta
"abbasso il Direttor!"
La zuppa ormai l'è cotta
E noi cantiamo tutti
Vogliamo detto fatto
La pappa al pomodor!
The belly that mumbles
It is the cause of the conspiracy
It is the cause of the struggle
"down with the Director!"
The soup is now cooked
And we all sing
We want said done
The pappa al pomodoro!
Viva la pa-pa-pappa
Col po-po-po-po-po-po-pomodoro
Ah viva la pa-pa-pappa
Che è un capo-po-po-po-polavoro
Viva la pa-pappa pa-ppa
Col po-po-pomodor
Viva la pa-pappa pa-ppa
Col po-po-pomodor!
Long live the pappa
With tomato
Ah, long live pappa
Which is a masterpiece
Long live the pappa
With tomato
Long live the pappa
