Biography

Shin Sang-ok Shin is Notable.

Shin Sang-ok [신상옥] was a South Korean filmmaker, known as "The Prince of South Korean Cinema". He had more than producer and 70 director credits to his name.[1]

Shin Sang-ok was born as Shin Tae-seo on 11 October in Chongjin, at the time in Japanese-occupied Korea, now North Korea.[1]

Shin studied in Japan at the Tokyo Fine Arts School. He started his film career working on Choi In-kyu's Viva Freedom!, the first Korean film made after the country achieved independence from Japan. He became a prolific film director and producer. His best-known films were made in the s and 60s, many of them collaborations with his wife Choi Eun-hee.[1]

In , Shin and Choi were kidnapped by North Korean leader Kim Jong-il for the purpose of producing critically acclaimed films. The two remained in captivity for 8 years until , when they escaped and sought asylum in the United States.[1]

Shin married actress Choi Eun-hee in She starred in many of his films. After she was diagnosed with infertility, the couple adopted two children, Shin Jeong-kyun and Shin Myung-kim. Choi divorced Shin in after seeing news that he had fathered two children with actress Oh-Su-mi. Subsequently after they were kidnapped and brought separately to North Korea, they remarried in [2]

Shin and Choi moved to Los Angeles, where we worked in the s under the name Simon Sheen. He returned to South Korea permanently in [1]

Shin Sang-ok died on 11 April in Seoul, South Korea, due to hepatitis.[1] The US Social Security Death Index for Simon Sheen indicates that he was born on 18 October , acquired a US social security number in , last residence was Northridge, Los Angeles, and died on 11 April [3]
